Today I saw a sign reading: “Due to the economy, this store is permanently closed.”
I would not highlight this, since it is a sadly common phenomenon of late, except that the sign was on the door of a Salvation Army thrift store.
You know it’s bad when even the charity stores are closing.

February 19, 2009 at 2:41 pmI’ve heard that donations have gone down sharply, prompting these closings. It’s doubly tragic, since the shops won’t be there for people with straightened budgets and the revenue stream won’t be there for charitable works.

February 22, 2009 at 2:19 pmMy partner and I were in the Goodwill on the south side of Pittsburgh today looking for another desk and not only did they not have a desk, or a writing table, but their furniture section was empty save for a single kitchen chair, a broken wardrobe, and an ottoman.
I said, Holy cow! Caty said, Things are worse than I thought.

February 24, 2009 at 1:53 pmI saw a Salvation Army a couple weeks ago in Gresham that looked closed. Salvation Army might not be the greatest example, though, because they tend to do weird things with their assets to “save money” or whatever (i.e. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/03/nyregion/thecity/03evan.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=salvation%20army%20gramercy%20park&st=cse)
