The best one today: “Teenage Girl Obviously Having Affair With Bat.”
Obviously.
I am sorry that I am only writing about spam. I am fighting a cold and trying to get things done and neither of these things are conducive to scintillating blog entries.
But I will make one more spam observation. I get two types: regular ol’ email spam and comment spam on this blog. (Though somewhat less of the latter since I installed Comment Timeout — thanks Jessamyn!)
The email spam is all about making me feel awful about what I lack. (Size, funds, drugs, pretty girls — also, according to several I’ve received lately, a non-stupid face.)
The comment spam is all about making me feel great. You make an excellent point sryan! I saw a post about Tove Jansson on another blog, but I agree with yours more! (Followed, in each case, by a few dozen hideous links.)
I suppose the idea is that you’re less likely to delete comments if they’re complimentary? Like you won’t notice all the links because you’re so gosh-darned thrilled at the spammer’s commendation of your post?
Curious: those of you who get both types of spam, is this split consistent with your experience?

July 22, 2008 at 3:18 amEntirely consistent, although there’s also the third category, which I find hits both comments and inbox–the nonsensical variety. (Which is what you’ve been quoting all along, so it’s not like you didn’t mention it. You just didn’t include it in the split.)

July 22, 2008 at 6:20 amOh yeah, nonsense! A subcategory of which is the headline. Another one from yesterday: “Paris Hilton to Operate Atom Smasher.”

July 22, 2008 at 11:20 amOh, yes, the artful spam headline. I sometimes like to read the nonsense spam novellas aloud (they’re really meant to be read aloud, I find) but the Sig Fig, sadly, hasn’t my appreciation for the genre.
