It’s funny. For the amount that I write about theater, and as much as I value it and think it is awesome and amazing, I spend remarkably little time actually, you know, seeing live theater.

But that’s gonna change this weekend, and I am super excited. For the first time since I’ve lived in Portland, I am making the drive down to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Has anyone besides quirkybird been before? Anything I must see while I’m in Ashland? It will be my first time in Ashland, too…

It’s awesome. I was up there last year, I think. Everything I saw (Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Importance of Being Ernest, Cyrano) was fantastic. Two Gents was the most radical. During the country scenes, everyone was in Amish clothes, in the city: tennis whites, and in the forrest of outlaws: Goth attire. It worked to Two Gents, because the plot is really problematic. Two friends competing for one girl. She likes Boy A, but Boy B absconds with her and tries to rape her. Boy A stops him, but then says, in essence, your friendship means a lot to me, so it’s alright if you rape my girlfriend. Then Boy B has a sudden change of heart. It’s a weird ending, so the costumes made the whole thing surreal, and made it work.

I love Ashland – I’ve never made it to the festival though. I wanted to go to Southern Oregon earlier this month but family issues intervened. Perhaps I’ll make an October run ….
