A duck, a disembodied arm, and some German Village inhabitants

We went into Columbus to see Julie’s new teen section-in-progress and meet Jessica for dinner, and I took a few pictures. Not of the library, although it was definitely keen. I’m just contrary like that. But this fountain is right outside.

The shot is too close up for you to be able to tell how close the fountain (and thus, the duck) is to a fairly busy street. The duck was alone, though: no ducklings in evidence to make way for.
There were two of these lamps outside the restaurant, which has been open since shortly after Prohibition.

Afterwards we walked around the neighborhood, which has been around since considerably before Prohibition, though presumably the gnomes and the dog are of somewhat more recent vintage.

There is a duck couple who appear to have taken up residence under someone’s front porch near Hawthorne Blvd. The other day, as I was coming back from my lunch break, the ducks suddenly came wobbling out, the female dropping an egg as she was tromping across the grass. I actually watched her lay an egg in the middle of the lawn while she was walking. The male duck, following along behind her, appeared to then be trying to roll the egg with his beak (although he might have been trying to eat it–it’s hard to tell the difference), so I left them alone so as not to scare them.

See, this is what happens when we don’t teach our daughters about the facts of life: they pop out babies on other people’s front lawns and then run away…
