Hey everybody: Thanks so much for coming to the reading last night. I was so pleased to see y’all there! I wasn’t on top of it enough to get any photos, unfortunately, otherwise I would have documented the crowd, and especially the amazing special guest that looked exactly like Lucky.
Those of you who haven’t read Rules yet, Lucky appears in the cast of characters thusly: LUCKY, 3, a dog.

May 14, 2007 at 12:20 amHello there,
I have worked at Borders Books for 2 years and just came across both of your novels tonight. Actually… the fact that they both mysteriously flew off the shelf at me is a more accurate description of what happened.
I thought I would just drop by and say that I think it is a wonderful thing what you are doing for these kids. They need more messages like yours in their world.
When the statistics of teen suicides being related to sexual identity issues is on the rise we need stronger voices and more of them.
Thank you for all that you do.

May 15, 2007 at 1:05 amNo problem… however, I received no email. My spam thing is really nutty and sometimes it throws out things it shouldn’t. Would you mind resending… or leaving me the message on myspace.
Sorry and thank you.

May 15, 2007 at 8:27 amsure! here’s what i sent:
Hey Jessica — Thanks so much! I hope you didn’t sustain any injuries when the books flew off the shelf at you. ;)
BTW, I have a soft spot for all Borders because I grew up in Ann Arbor, going to Borders back when there was only one store. :)

May 15, 2007 at 10:28 amAwww… Borders is lovely. I am their merchandising supervisor… which is how I came across the books in the first place! I was putting some of Sachar’s book on display and yours (sitting on the shelf just above his) apparently wanted to go too. I took it as a sign and there they stand!
Any injury would’ve been worth it. As soon as I read the inside cover/back of the books I thought of at least 12 teens that I knew of who would benefit from reading your novels.
They need that extra voice of hope and assurance. It is unfortunate that there aren’t as many options for them as there should be.
I was blessed with an understand family and group of friends. I don’t have that beautifully tragic “coming out” story. It just amazes me that there are children, teens and adults all over the world that don’t have similar support system.
Thank you again,
Jess
