Blog

This is to say

that I’ve just started reading Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers: exploring participatory culture by Henry Jenkins, whose blog I should probably also be reading. So far it’s fascinating. Also, it has the best cover on an academic book that I’ve seen in some time.

In case you don’t click through to the LibraryThing link above, the cover features a photo of a Stormtrooper investigating a display of Star Wars figures. As my friend Alex would have said back in high school, while flailing his arms in a particular way, “SUPER WIN!”

I *so* want this book now. I wasn’t aware of it, until you posted about it. Now I must have it.

The book seems to cover A LOT of my favorite pet research topics:

    * the construction of geek identity

    * the power dynamics and sociology of fan communities

    * how fandom is practiced (the approved buy-a-million-licensed-collector’s-items version vs. the more creative remix-oriented version)

And yeah, that cover is like a million different kinds of po-mo meta-referential goodness.

That’s definitely going onto my to-buy list. Cheers!
