All this time the fireworks keep exploding — every time there’s a momentary pause, we relax, but then more go off, Nick’s hands shake again, and I tense up. Every explosion is accompanied by shrieks, laughter, and applause. In between the fireworks, the pale shallow circle from the flashlight is the only illumination. All the streetlamps are burned out.
