when we rented them that Liz Garbus was associated with both Girlhood (director) and Con Man (executive producer). I’ll definitely seek out her work in future. Her company: Moxie Firecracker Films. The one I want to see next: The Travelers. It aired on MTV, and it’s about young adults who hop freight trains. (Tangentially, I also find it interesting that as a speaker, she’s represented by the same agency that represents Neil Gaiman…)

Girlhood was amazing. A fine companion to Boys of Baraka (and, inevitably, The Wire, since anything set in Baltimore is now going to remind me of it). The film focuses on two girls. One stabbed another girl to death. The other is guilty of multiple assaults. You see them first in a correctional facility. The film follows them for three years. What happens during that time is fascinating and compelling.
Con Man was also fascinating, but not as satisfying, because the subject’s motives and psyche remain enigmatic. I’m not sure any director could have gotten him to explain himself completely, though.
