Hey Portlanders

If you’re in middle or high school, register for the Convention on the Rights of Children & Youth, coming up Thursday June 1st at the Expo Center. What’s better than a historic opportunity for youth to get together and stand up for youth rights, unless it’s a historic opportunity to stand up for youth rights while getting the day off from school?

PS — Yes, the getting the day off school part is true. All the superintendents agreed. Tell your teachers. If you’re a teacher, tell your principal.

PPS — Ignore the fact that some things on the page linked above say “Children’s Bill of Rights” — it’s definitely both children and youth. And if you’re over 18, but not yet 21, you’re absolutely welcome, too.

thank you so much for not saying “an historic”

make sure you pay attention to the rights of kids to have their own library cards where the records do NOT get sent home to the parent if there is some hint of trouble. That’s the way SPL always did it and I thought it was sort of lame.

I’ve found that many student/youth vioce opportunities tend to be a waste of time, run by adults who don’t really care. It’s just let’s-get-some-input-from-the-kids-even-though-we’re-not-going-to-do-anything.

Is this convention actually going to be worthwhile, or is it just some sort of PR for the city?

fantastic question, and i know just the kind of event you mean, ugh. i think and hope this’ll be an exception to that lame trend. the multnomah youth commission is hosting, smyrc is a sponsor, lots of other good people/organizations are involved and all the big decisions are being made by youth.
