…some people might find it creepy that among the books I bought at an estate sale today was The Hour of Our Death, by Philippe Ariès, “a landmark history of Western Man’s changing attitudes toward death — and thus his perceptions of life itself — over the last one thousand years.”
The sale took place in an old church that’s now someone’s (but not the dead man’s) home. It was all books, enough to stock a small leftist store. While we vultures descended on boxes and boxes worth of socialist, communist, and generally anti-establishment literature, in another part of the main hall there was a TV set up.
It was playing a workshop. Given by the dead man. He lectured as we picked over his book collection.

April 15, 2006 at 1:09 pmI kind of really want to live in a church. I mean, how cool would that be? I would change my name to Quasimodo.

April 15, 2006 at 11:30 pmWhat was the video lecture about? Was it directed to those of you at the book sale?

April 16, 2006 at 6:30 amgood question. it was a political talk, and (thankfully?) no, it wasn’t specifically addressed to us. (but i have heard of cases where people who know they’re going to die record videos of themselves to be played at their funerals.)

April 16, 2006 at 1:55 pmOh, yeah! I heard about that guy… Wasn’t he the one who died of that weird brain virus transmitted by microbes living on the pages of old books? Poor devil spent five weeks screaming in agony.
