Back from Seattle

It was great to see folks at the show Saturday! On Sunday, as is my tradition at comic conventions, I abandoned our table to wander the city.

I bought music:
Lost and Safe, The Books (sound collage-y, mellow)
Lovekraft, Super Furry Animals (bringing the funk from Wales)
If You’re Feeling Sinister, Belle and Sebastian (see also the comic book)
Fucc the I.N.S., Kultur Shock (recommended by the excellent staff of Bistro E)

Tell me about the last music-related item you bought. (Concert ticket? CD? A song? Equipment? Etc…)

My last was a live album by the Asylum Street Spankers, a very odd band that my friend Hannah hooked me on. They do these hilarious, frequently very bawdy songs, using strange and inappropriate instruments – and then they’ll suddenly turn around and do some gorgeous, lush torchy thing that makes your jaw drop.

They do this sort of thrash-redneck cover of Prince’s 1999 that has been on heavy rotation in my car for months. It’s lovely.

The last music-related item I bought would have been a ticket to see Gogol Bordello and Kultur Shock!

The cd I’m really digging right now is Kings of Leon, Aha Shake Heartbreak. Unfortunately, I saw they played here in January, but hadn’t become enamoured yet…alas!

They were recommended to me before, and now I see they are schedule at the Tractor here in Seattle on the 28th. You recommend them live?

hmmm. last musical purchase: drinks at the club on Friday don’t count. although they nearly do, since I was only out to see the DJs, friends of mine who drove in from Madison. Then we’re going all the way back to last week! I have been listening to new music courtesy of my coworkers, though: the Hurdy Gurdy Project (‘s) and Natacha Atlas (‘s) because we all get turns to put the music on in the workshop. I guess the last cash I spent was to see 45 Grave live the week before.

The Texiles love the Spankers. Hard core.

Strangely enough, I bought cds on Friday for the first time in maybe 6 months:
    – Neko Case: Fox Confessor brings the flood
    – Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins: Rabbit Fur Coat
    – Silver Jews: Tanglewood numbers

I guess it would have to be a purchase I made on iTunes, U2, City of Blinding Lights (that song has SO many personal connections/stirs up memories for me) but I’d rather say something like a Tegan and Sara shirt (www.teganandsara.com) or something of that nature.

Wow. Um… I’m not sure when the last time I bought something musical was. I photocopied some Bowie lyrics at the library so I could take cites from them (“star man” and “Homo superior”), does that count?

The last time I bought music was last summer: Radiohead’s OK Computer and The Pixies Greatest Hits (or whatever it was called…did they really ever have a “hit”?)

I want to buy: Ray Davies’ new album, the last two records by Beck and by Sleater-Kinney; and various singles from iTunes from The Killers, The Strokes, Gem, the Aztec Monkeys and other white boy crap like that.

Oh, and: Katie really likes “Peaches” by The Presidents. Owen and I headbang to Metallica in the car driving home from daycare.

Wicked tickets for this weekend. I didn’t want to wait a year and half, so I payed a wayyyy inflated price on Ebay. Oh, well. The show better be good.

Definitely. I missed them the last time they came through here, but my friend came back from the show with the live DVD and we nearly cracked some ribs watching it. They are hilarious, wildly energetic and they really get the audience into the show. We’re planning to catch them the next time through. They have some video clips on their website if you’re interested. (I reccomend “Hick Hop” for the not-easily-offended, it’s a scream.)

Last music I bought was The Magic Numbers’ debut album. I’d already downloaded and listened to it a number of times, and liked it so much that I felt guilty for not paying for it, so I paid for it.
