So there’ve been a bunch of articles and posts about schools banning LJ, MySpace, xanga, FaceBook & other related sites.
I’m curious: those of you in schools (students or teachers), does your school restrict these sites? If so, was there a specific incident that triggered the restriction?

January 17, 2006 at 4:19 amI’m pretty sure my school has banned Myspace, but it’s just cause they’re conservative Christian private etc.. i dont think there was an actual incident. they don’t really need a reason.
now, banning brokeback mountain in utah.. that made me mad.

January 17, 2006 at 5:38 amLiveJournal I can get into. (Like now). Just did a quick check…MySpace-No. Xanga- Yes. Facebook-Yes.
I know there are a few message boards that I scanned once or twice during lunch break that were blocked later, so I don’t know what kind of service they use to block. Our upperschoolers all have laptops, so blocking MySpace and gaming sites is a way to get kids to stay on task in class. I don’t think there is any specific incident. The kids seem pretty responsible for the most part, but then i don’t see the Upper School students much.

January 22, 2006 at 10:48 amDuring winter break, they did a scan of the most commonly visited sites. LJ and Xanga were in the top five. They went to those sites, decided that students could access inappropriate material and banned them…
The bastards…

January 29, 2006 at 4:59 amIn my school we’re not aloud on any sites in which we can contact other people, but i think like live journal and stuff like that is okay, but i’m not exactly sure. In our rivaling jr high (my best friend goes there) someone wrote an article in their paper about myspace, and it got banned from that. i dont have computer class or anything right now though, so i dont know about any of the sites really.

February 1, 2006 at 9:51 amMy college is using the facebook to find out about students who live in the dorms. (ie getting them in trouble for drinking ect.) it’s really quite silly.

February 17, 2006 at 1:55 pmI guess ’cause people meet people on the internet and it’s dangerous. I mean, you have kids with their photos up there, and pediphiles who lie about their age and put up fake photos up say they wanna meet somewhere, and the kids are dumb enough to trust them. I mean, well, I met My girlfriedd on MySpace, but it’s not something to encourage, ya know?
Besides…. kids can log in at school if they know what site to go to. Like we do. (Ooohh, we’re such bad kids ^_^ )

March 30, 2006 at 4:05 amyes, and it’s ridiculous. i think people have developed a fear of blogs and what their children may put out there, but if they were to simply monitor their children’s blog sites and make sure they weren’t posting anything they deem innappropriate, it is better then blocknig the child from these sites at all. It doesn’t matter how many times a parental figure can say no, the child will find a way to view it and join it and do it, that’s what children and teenagers do: rebel. Like I said before, if the parents would tolerate it a little bit the kids wouldn’t see the need to rebel and put innapropriate things online because they know their parents would be checking it.
