Eugene

The Eugene reading was fabulous. Great crowd. Great bookstore.Funny interaction afterwards: a woman came up to me to compliment me on my reading, and said that Tsunami Books was such a great venue, better than a lot of places, because “You couldn’t say ‘dyke’ out loud at the Eugene Public Library.”

My friend Connie said, “Oh, I’m pretty sure you could.”

The woman was dubious.

I said, “Connie would know.”

“Oh,” she said to Connie, “do you work for the library?”

“She’s the director,” I said.

Once we got back from Eugene, it was a totally productive weekend. Got two comics scripts into shape. Completed all manner of domestic tasks. Worked out.

All accomplished via the simple if cheerless strategy of not doing anything social.

hey jack — you could have made it only if you had started the book, um, more than four years ago…so it’s okay! :)

hey, i’m jack’s best friend. he just emailed this site to me. i’m the friend who kept on pestering him to read your books. i read ’empress of the world’ in february of this year when the school librarian at my now former school told me about it. she said that it was a book about gay teenagers and that it was a super popular book in school. i just thought ‘sure, what the hell, it can’t be that bad’. so i checked it out and i LOVED it. i read it in about two days. so i returned the book and recommended it to all of my friends who weren’t homophobes. and then the librarian told me that the sequel was coming out in april, so i told her to put me in as number one on the waiting list. april rolled around. every day, i’d walk into the library and ask honore (the librarian) if the book was here yet. finally, after a few weeks, the book arrived and i had to fight it over from some people who wanted their dirty little paws on it. i managed to take it home first. whew! but that was 2 months ago and i’ve been really hoping that you’ll write another book to your ‘battle and nicola’ series-type-thing. anywhoo, i think that it’s super cool that you live in portland and that ‘rules for hearts’ takes place there because oregon gets hardly any publicity, don’t you think? anyway, you should come down to eugene again sometime for a reading or something. we aren’t that far away. i mean, j.k. rowling lives in SCOTLAND and she’s coming over to america this summer for a reading tour. i bet you could SOMEHOW fit it into your schedule. could you? please? it’d be awesome possum if you could. besides, here in eugene we have…um…lots of good bakeries and you could…eat cake…? yeah. come to eugene.

hey, lilah! nice to hear from you. i’d love to come back to eugene. coincidentally, i met a really nice person on the flight back from washington d.c. who is from eugene.

pretty much, i go places when a bookstore, library or school books me to come and do an event. so if you can find a bookstore or library or school who’d like to bring me to eugene, chances are very good that i’ll come!

hehe, sara ryan responded to me…it’s really weird to be corresponding with you, because i’ve never talked to an actor, author, etc. that i really liked before i ever met or talked to them.
